Marlyn Moore: director of security & Spirit Award winner

March 10, 2025

Marlyn Moore, winner of this year’s Evergreen Health Spirit Award, is described by his colleagues as “a constant positive presence, someone who is just as fearless as they are selfless and represents everything that Evergreen is all about.”

The Spirit Award is given each year to one Evergreen Health, Pride Center or Community Access Services employee who goes above and beyond their day-to-day job duties and exemplifies our Core Values:

  • We welcome everyone.
  • We are authentic, respect everyone’s life experiences and don’t judge.
  • We collaborate with each other, our patients and our community.
  • We are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
  • We use the harm reduction model and celebrate all successes.

As Evergreen’s director of security, Marlyn makes sure that all our staff and patients are safe and secure, and that our guests feel welcomed when they walk in the door.

Marlyn first joined team Evergreen as our Nutrition Outreach and Education Program coordinator, helping clients get connected to SNAP benefits. As our director of security, he now oversees a staff of 12 spread out across all Evergreen locations, including Community Access Services and the Pride Center.

At our 206 S. Elmwood location, where Marlyn spends most of his days, he’s often the first face that patients see when they come in the building. He remembers lots of patients by face and name, and he’s known for his warm and welcoming attitude.

Marlyn brings unconditional understanding to the hard moments: “we understand that some of the patients that come to Evergreen are under stress, dealing with personal issues, or need medical attention. We deal with both the good and the bad on a daily basis. Our priority is to make sure everyone is safe, and we do our best to de-escalate any issues that arise.”

To Marlyn, his job is much more than just keeping everyone safe: “I like to see our patients feeling like they belong. Building relationships based off trust and satisfaction makes me feel like I’ve done my job.”

And as evidenced by the many people who nominated Marlyn for the Spirit Award, he cares about his coworkers as much as he cares about our patients: “When I think about Evergreen’s culture, the first word that comes to mind is family. I like to think we implement respect for coworkers and patients. If you work here, I think you already have the compassion. I consider a lot of people here family. Working with them and enjoying good times together, who wouldn’t like that?”

Outside of work, you can often find Marlyn at the grill. “I love to cook. I’m always grilling or making food. I love to bring food in for co-workers to share. And if you haven’t already been to a cookout at my house you’re missing out.”

Marlyn grew up in Buffalo and loves spending time with his wife and kids. “I have one college graduate, one enrolled at Buffalo State and the last entering their first year at UB. Being a role model, a great dad, is what it’s all about. Watching your kids grow into adulthood and guiding them.”
