5 easy tips for better health

January 15, 2025

If you’re looking forward to warmer days and setting some new health goals, try one of these five easy tips that your team at Evergreen can support you with.

Make (and keep) your health care appointments

Is your yearly primary care checkup for 2025 scheduled yet? One of the easiest commitments you can make to your health this year is to go to your annual wellness appointment.

Your annual appointment is the best way to check in with your overall health: preventative screenings catch potential issues early on and reduce your risk of common health problems.

If you want to level this goal up a notch, ask your primary care physician about getting a referral to any specialty care departments that you’ve been meaning to visit, like the mental health department, dentist, or gynecologist.

Take care of your sexual health

If you’re sexually active, add an STI (sexually transmitted infection) test to your health goals for this year. STIs can affect anyone, and the only way to know if you have an STI is to get tested! Evergreen offers non-judgmental, educational and understanding testing and treatment for STIs, hepatitis C and HIV.

You can make a testing appointment online or by calling 716.847.2441. We’ll get you in for an appointment quickly and you’ll get your results within a week. If you’re worried about the cost of testing, don’t be: your health is most important and we don’t turn anyone away due to inability to pay.

If you’re at risk of acquiring HIV, ask your provider if PrEP is right for you. There are now several ways you can take PrEP, and anyone who wants to reduce their risk of becoming HIV positive can take PrEP. If you are living with HIV, we can help you become and stay undetectable and untransmittable through medication and supportive services.

Don’t forget, our safer sex stations are always available to Evergreen patients. Stop by anytime to pick up as many free condoms as you need.

Check in with your mental health

Your mental health and wellness is an important part of your overall health. If you’ve thought about seeing a counselor or psychiatrist to get some support with your mental health, why not make it a goal for this year?

Our mental health team meets you where you are and helps you work toward your goals, on your own terms. We offer culturally competent care to anyone seeking support with their mental health, including people seeking trauma-informed care, LGBTQ+ affirming mental health care and gender affirming care evaluations – ask your primary care provider for a referral.

Learn how better nutrition can support your health

Did you know that Evergreen has a resident registered dietician who can help you meet your goals around nutrition? If you:

  • are living with diabetes, HIV or another chronic illness and want to learn more about how your nutrition is connected to your overall health
  • use a food pantry and want to learn better shopping and chopping (vegetables, that is) skills
  • have concerns about obesity
  • just want to learn more about how you can give your body the best nutrition for you

Ask your primary care provider for a referral to learn more about how registered dietician services can support you.

Try a wellness program

Evergreen’s THRIVE Wellness Center, a wellness program that’s available to any of our primary and specialty care patients, offers a variety of free programs, groups and activities, including:

  • art therapy and guided imagery
  • diabetes education group
  • heart disease education group
  • HIV education and support group
  • healthy lunches and cooking demonstrations
  • yoga
  • acupuncture therapy

Ask your primary or specialty care provider for a referral to learn more.
